Anchor Text and Audience:
In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse, by Joseph M. Marshall III, tells the story of Jimmy McClean. He is a Lakota boy, however he does not look the part. He is the son of a father who is half Caucasian and half Lakota, and a Lakota mother. At his school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, Jimmy is bullied because he does not look like the other Lakota children. He has blue eyes and light brown hair. Jimmy's grandfather, Nyles High Eagle, takes him on a journey and teachers him about the history of the Lakota. This includes the story of Crazy Horse. Jimmy learns that before being called Crazy Horse, this leader was known as "Light Hair." By learning more about his heritage, Jimmy is able to learn more about and become more accepting of himself. This text, and the accompanying text set, is intended to be used to help sixth grade students learn more about, develop a connection to, and develop a greater understanding of the Lakota people. This documentary is “told from the perspective of contemporary Lakota people” (Lakota, 2016). It examines the life of Crazy Horse, specifically his leadership and the Battle of Little Bighorn. Students will be able to see a visual example of how the Lakota lived and what their surroundings looked like.
