ANCHOR TEXT: Before we Eat: From Farm to Table, By Pat Brisson
A chronological explanation of the hard work that goes in to getting food to our table. From growing and processing crops, raising livestock and catching fish, to driving delivery trucks and working as cashier, it explains who and what is involved at each step in the process. Written in simple prose poetry.
Audience:
2nd grade class at an urban, low income, bilingual (Spanish/English) school. Most students are ELs with a native language of Spanish. There is a wide range of reading level in the class ranging from pre-readers to fourth grade level, but the majority of students fall at grade level or less than a year behind.
Purpose:
Students will learn about where their food comes from and the people who work to get it from the farm to their table.

Where does our food come from? How does it get from the farm to our home?
